ALAN BOOTH

"Aesthete of Clay"

Alan’s website refers to him as an ‘aesthete of clay’ – a slight play on words but the sentiment is nonetheless accurate. He trained in Staffordshire under Derek Emms, focusing on ‘hand-thrown’ and Industrial ceramics. A degree in Multi-Disciplinary design – utilising various discrete media such as: Illustration and Photography ultimately specialising in ceramics.

I photograph natural subjects and landscapes – from as far afield as Japan (Kyoto), China (Beijing/Hangzhou), Vietnam and Cambodia, Italy (Venice) to more ‘local’ subjects from Cornwall, Cumbria, Scotland and Dorset.

Works emanate from my passion for the inherent beauty found in natural forms.

In terms of constructed work, photography is used extensively – some images finding their way into frames or ‘windows’. Others are manipulated and printed as ceramic transfers. These are then ‘fired’ onto the external surfaces of ceramic forms.

Clay forms include: ‘high-fired’ red and white decorated earthenware, Raku, slip cast vases and fired decals.
