Lizzie Kirwan

"Lizzie takes her inspiration from the beauty of nature and countryside that surrounds her."

Lizzie Kirwan is a South Devon based Potter. Her studio can be found tucked away in the beautiful village of Broadhempston. Lizzie takes her inspiration from the beauty of nature and countryside that surrounds her. She portrays these shapes and forms in her designs. Lizzie has formed a great interest in sculpture and coiling technique and also alternative firings, utalising materials from Devon to create her unique pieces.

One area that Lizzie has truly fallen in love with is the use of smoke firing to create interesting designs. Smoke firing is a process whereby natural materials are burnt around the pots to create distinctive markings and colours. These materials are collected by Lizzie all over Devon from beaches, woodlands, rivers and moorland. One of her favourite materials is the use of seaweed and its diverse colours that it creates. Other materials include local horse hair, driftwood, bananas, citrus peel, pistachio shells, dried coffee and copper wire (the list goes on!) Lizzie pots are all hand built and completely unique, which is another great thing about smoke firing, no pot is the same!
