Edward King
Biography
Edward King is a self-taught ceramic artist based in Plymouth, UK. He works in stoneware clay, raw oxides, pyro-expanded slate and reactive glazes. He combines thrown and hand-built elements to create abstracted structures and forms that reflect his interest in dystopian concepts of the future. Edward draws inspiration from abandoned structures he has documented on his travels.
For the past 2 years, Edward has been working on a series of objects that look at the unlimited lifespan of vitrified clay and how we assign value to historical objects.
“I make things that I expect will return to the earth at some point in the future. What gets me excited is the thought that in some distant future, fragments of what I create could be unearthed…and then maybe there’s another cycle of studying, classifying and collecting. It is also possible that this may never happen, and we become an extinct species. Either way, the unknown is exciting.”
