Allowing materials and heat to direct my work
Experimental in nature, my work combines the semi-industrial process of casting with the unpredictability of saggar firing. The bone china and porcelain pieces are cast and then saggar fired in the kiln with metals, oxides and other combustible material with the different clay bodies and firing temperatures producing varied colours and effects. Working with plaster is fun but can be quite constricting and more recently I have expanded my practice to include thrown and coiled forms in contrast to the precision of cast work.
Since moving to Devon 18 months ago, I have built a wood fired kiln in my garden and have started experimenting with wood firings. I love the sociability and theatre of wood firing and would be happy to share this facility with other local potters.
