Inspired by the irregularity and imperfections of the natural world
I am drawn to the irregularity and imperfections of the natural world. I am therefore very inspired by the contemporary ceramic artists of Japan and Korea as well as those in my home country. Although I do throw some pots on the wheel, my real passion is the Japanese technique of ‘Kurinuki’ in which works are carved out from a solid body of clay.
I take a lot of inspiration from the colours and textures of nature, most often whilst on the daily dog walk along the local river, streams, fields and lanes. A lot of my work in terracotta is influenced directly by the dominant red sandstone geology of the surrounding area
