Clare StephensClares Ceramics

Receptive, collaborating, in conversion.

My ceramics embraces clays’ diversities, their varied and timeless properties engaging makers and potters globally. Pieces are intended to be interacted with, both visually and by touch, reflecting parallels with my previous midwifery career; hands, mind and body working in unison, receptive, collaborating, in conversion. This underpins my creativity, being in constant flux, balance, reflected in use of clay, form, and curation.

Pieces are usually thrown on the potter’s wheel, with firings appropriate to clays used. Wood fired and stoneware pieces contrast with those made from local brick and dug clays, which also form many of my Terra Sigillatas. Making and materials are core to my processes as are tacit skills and knowledge inherited from generations of makers, placed into our contemporary setting.
