"My work is influenced by observations of the sea in and along the coast near my home"

My work is influenced by observations of the sea in and along the coast near my home – its colours, power, sense of movement and depth etc are of particular interest.

The work results in various vessel forms, sometimes quite large. I often use several layers of brushed matt and running glazes, which interact during the long high temperature firing to give a sense of depth to the surface and a feeling of fluidity and rhythm to the piece.

Most of my work is thrown on the wheel in fine porcelain. This offers an opportunity for depth of colour and rhythm to the work.
Over many years, the forms have become simpler, which allows the surface effects to come through more strongly.

I also make a small range of pottery for use in the kitchen – and intended to enrich rather than adorn the home.
