Meriel Chudleigh
Studio pottery. Expressive slipware & coppice wood-fired stoneware.
I have a strong sense of belonging to Cornwall, particularly Lostwithiel. Pottery has been made here for many years and slipware is a local expressive art. It celebrates life and the turn of the rural year. Two seemingly simple materials direct my making, warm hued terracotta and luscious creamy slip. Usually wheel thrown and electric fired, my red earthenware pots are layered with opaque or partly transparent liquid clays and scored with marks inspired by trees, hedgerows, the river and the sky.
My wood fired pots also reflect a strong local character, using Dobles stoneware and a Leach treadle wheel, they are glazed with wood ash and other mixed raw materials. My small kiln is fuelled by coppiced native species harvested from the land. The dynamic atmosphere of burning wood permanently fixes varied elemental effects onto the clay surfaces.
Creatively, two different approaches link my sense of place to each ceramic piece intended for both aesthetic and functional daily use.
