"My reference has always been the natural world"

My references have always been the natural world, though occasionally I use architecture as a starting point. I am interested in form and shape – altering simple forms to achieve something less familiar and more interesting. Any decoration must truly feel part of the piece and not an add on.

I hand build with white earthenware clays, using slabs and coils. They provide an excellent ground for the addition of colour, pattern and texture. The surfaces of my pieces are coloured with slips, underglazes, oxides and man-made colourants. Together these interact with the transparent glaze, giving a glossy and inviting finish.
