"shape, form and function"

I am interested in how simple domestic forms tell stories about their use and origin. I make earthenware harvest jugs, a traditional North Devon form with a great history. The story is firstly in the shape and use of the jug (to take cider out into the fields) and secondly in the sgraffito carved through a thick layer of white slip with patterns, representations and often a rhyme or a comment. After a bisque firing, a red iron oxide glaze is applied to give the traditional yellow/brown appearance.

I also take simple stoneware tea bowls, often with a foot and distort them before applying a glaze so that they remain a recognisable shape but stand out as a new form
