"I make large individual sculptural vessels, usually in a series and based on a theme"

I make large individual sculptural vessels, usually in a series and based on a theme or a particular natural or man-made form. Materials are chosen to suit different themes e.g. smoke-fired terracotta with resist slips, stoneware and paper clays with stains, oxides and appropriate glazes.

Current work has been inspired by studies of a neglected/distressed C17th Indigo dye book. From these a series of ‘Ceramic Books’ have been developed using paper clays with impressed text and oxides. Other visual elements of this artifact have informed the abstract surface markings on a series of large stem bowls and squared dishes.

Experiments with slip-casting in bone china have resulted in a series of vessels with individualized carved and pierced rims with other added details.
